This past weekend the nations of France and Greece tossed out Presidents who were supporting so-called “austerity” measures, belt-tightening budget cuts that were primarily going to hurt students, the elderly and blue-collar workers. Sound familiar? That is the gist of the Paul Ryan plan that Willard “Mitt” Romney endorses. These countries are democracies and the budget cuts proposed went after the 99% of the population, but were perceived as leaving the rich alone, without asking them to also feel the pain of cutbacks.
Republicans should take a good, hard look at what happened in France and Greece because the United States is also a democracy and the Ryan plan also seeks cuts to student loans, medicare and to leave intact all the tax cuts for the wealthy. England has also put in place these budget cuts and their economy has tanked as well. It’s easy for some politicians to look at the pyramid on the dollar and believe that budget money should come from the wider part, which happens to be the worker population. That would make their rich friends happy, causing their campaign bank accounts to explode, but fair is fair and workers, students and the elderly will always revolt when budget cuts are only out of their pockets.
